Cockroach
Cockroaches are mainly attracted to food, water and shelter. To them, almost anything is food including paper, cloth, plants, and even glue used for binding books! They prefer a damp environment, and are mostly active at night.

Mice
Mice often enter homes in cooler weather to seek shelter. They can enter any hole the size of a dime. Not only are mice a nuisance, they can cause damage to the structure through their gnawing activities. Although the house mouse is a natural scavenger, it prefers to eat cereal, grains and seeds. Since they are mostly active at night, they have well developed hearing and touch-receptors to alert them its night-time activities. They will frequently investigate new objects put into their territory.

Rats
Rats are primarily active at night and prefer narrow, concealed out-of-the-way routes when moving about. They can enter any hole the size of a quarter. They are creatures of habit, and usually follow the same pathways, but they are highly adaptable. Rats have minimal control of their bladder and cannot vomit, therefore any rodenticide they swallow cannot be voided from the stomach.

Silverfish
Silverfish are primarily active at night, and prefer humid dark areas of a structure. They like to rest in tight cracks or crevices. They breed optimally in temperatures of 22C to 27C; hence they require a high relative humidity. They feed quietly on starchy substances such as glue, wall paper paste, etc. They will also eat biscuit and bread crumbs, and other starchy food stuffs. Damage is characterized as irregular holes.

Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants nest in wood and feed on many other pests and organic material. They are a wood destroying insect because they excavate galleries in moist, damp wood in order to nest. They can be black or brown in colour, and between ¼” and ½” in size.

Bees, Wasps & Hornets
While wasps, hornets and bees are very beneficial insects in nature, they can be quite bothersome in an urban environment. Also, they can endanger the health of certain people who may have an allergic reaction to their sting.

Carpet Beetles
The larva of the carpet beetle can cause serious damage to materials of animal origin such as wool, fur, hair, feathers and brushes made from animal hair. They develop rapidly in stored products which contain a high animal protein content such as dry dog and cat food, powdered milk, or cereals.
The larvae do all the damage. As soon as they hatch, they begin feeding and are able to crawl quickly to other food areas. They prefer the dark and are rarely seen in light places. Adults do not feed on clothing, but feed outdoors on flowers.

Moths
There are two kinds of moths you can have a problem with inside your home; clothing moths and food moths. Only the larvae of food and clothing moths do any damage.
Clothing moth larvae can be highly destructive to materials of animal origin such as woolens, furs, silk, feathers and hair. The larvae can feed upon cotton, linen and synthetic fabrics if they are contaminated by perspiration, urine, milk, beer or fruit juice. Only the larvae of the moths are injurious to clothing.
|
|
Depending on the type of moth the larvae can be found in foods including cereals, dried fruit, stored grains, flour, spices, pet food, rice, chocolate and candy.

Centipede
Centipedes are predatory insects, meaning they eat other insects that may be infesting your home. They are more of a nuisance pest as they are quite unsightly. They can inflict a painful bite but won’t do so unless they are harassed. They are often found in damp areas such as basements.

Fleas
Fleas are a very irritating pest to have as the adult requires a blood meal from a host to feed. You don’t have to have a pet to have fleas. They can jump approximately 15 cm so they can easily hitch a ride on trousers and infest new areas. Fleas are often found close the bedding of the host. They will also thrive in damp humid conditions as high moisture is necessary for their survival.

Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are small, flat, oval bloodsucking insects that infest the sleeping quarters of man and other animals. Their presence is not necessarily the result of poor housekeeping, since these insects may be brought into a home in spite of all reasonable precautions. If introduced into a home, they may become very numerous and irritating and affect the welfare of the occupants.
|
|
Bed bugs feed mostly at night by biting sleeping people. It feeds, and then crawls to a hiding place where it remains for several days digesting its meal before emerging and seeking another meal of blood. Under normal conditions an adult bed bug may live four months to a year, or more!

Spiders
With a rich food supply, spiders can multiply rapidly. Since spiders prey on other insects, eliminating them will eliminate the spiders. Most spiders in the home become active only at night and usually remain unnoticed in cool, dark corners.
